Where is your home's water shut off valve?

6/8/2022 (Permalink)

Do you know where your home's water shut off valve is? Water gushing through your house is hazardous and dangerous. Knowing where your valve is located may help with lowering the amount of flood damage caused to your home.

The first line of defense to stop a leak would be from inside your home (under sinks, toilets, and next to water heaters.)

Next, check your home's main water shut off valve, Typically, this is located on the perimeter of the house. since that is where the water first enters your house. Also, stay on the side of the house that is facing the street. Your water main begins at the street and usually heads in a straight line to your home. When you find the valve, turn the handle or knife-style valve. Typically their low in the ground so if you want to stay prepared I would keep a water meter key handy. (long tool used to turn off switch).

If you can't locate your shut off valve after searching for it. One alternative is to check the property inspection report. which was completed for you when you were in the final stages of purchasing the home.

If both previous methods failed, there could be a valve located at the becringing of your water main, at the boundary line of your property and the street or sidewalk called a curb valve.

I hope this helps, If you ever find yourself in this wet situation
